It is with profound sadness that I share the passing of our beloved founder, Elliot Leonard, who left us on Saturday, June 6.
Elliot was more than a founder. He was a visionary, an advocate, a mentor, and chosen family to many of us. His life’s work was rooted in a single, unwavering belief: that every LGBTQ+ person deserves to live openly, safely, and with dignity.
His impact on our community is immeasurable, and his legacy will be felt for generations to come.
His Final Message to Our Community
Before his passing, Elliot prepared a message intended for Pride Month. Today, it feels more meaningful than ever to share his words:
“Don’t give up. You matter. Your life matters. Your voice matters. Our community matters.”
In the face of rising challenges targeting LGBTQ+ people, especially transgender individuals, LGBTQ+ youth, and those facing compounding forms of discrimination, Elliot’s call to action remains as urgent as ever. He believed deeply in the power of community, compassion, and intentional action. He also believed in the profound role of allies and affirming families, and the way a parent’s fierce, determined love can open doors and change hearts in spaces where our community has not always been welcomed.
Elliot described philanthropy simply and beautifully: a love of humanity and a commitment to making life better for others. That is what he embodied every single day, and that is what our movement has always been about.
Carrying His Vision Forward
Elliot’s greatest wish was that this work continue. With extraordinary care, he assembled a team of Trustees, his chosen family, to protect and advance that vision.
I made a promise to Elliot that I would lead with strategy, integrity, and compassion, and inspire others to do the same. That promise guides everything we do.
We have faced difficult moments before, and we are still here. We are survivors and builders of community. The Leonard-Litz Foundation will continue fighting for the LGBTQ+ community, because that is what Elliot built us to do.
If each of us strives to lead with just a little more kindness, generosity, courage, and love, the world will be a better place. That was Elliot’s challenge to all of us, and I intend to honor it.
